Atlanta Schools’ Long Term Partnership with General Electric

Atlanta Schools has been in a partnership with General Electric Energy since 1993 and will continue this partnership in the future. The partnership with General Electric involves several different ongoing projects and was originally started by former Atlanta Schools’ graduates who now are employed by General Electric. The General Electric Partnership was started as a tutoring and mentoring program where General Electric employees would volunteer in schools in the area but it has grown to include Saturday SAT preparation, the Family Technology Resource Center, and scholarship programs. There are now more than 1,500 General Electric employees involved in the General Electric Partnership in some way. The General Electric Partnership has proved to be very influential in student SAT performance.

In 2002, General Electric donated $1 million to Atlanta Schools’ Southside High School as part of General Electric’s national College Bound Grant Program. This donation to Southside High School was the first grant from the College Bound Grant Program to be given to a school in the Atlanta Schools. The grant is being used by Southside High School’s "Strategic Design for Student Success" project. The school wide project plans to double, by 2007, the percentage of Southside High School’s graduating seniors who go on to four-year or two-year colleges or universities, or who enroll in technical institutions.

I've been in law enforcement for 17 years and have a great deal of experience working in the street and dealing with the common problems and crimes of the average person. Unattended Property

Many people in the city become a victim to this crime. This mainly happens when someone is in a public place and puts down their wallet, purses, etc., doesn't pay attention, and then someone picks it up when noone is watching. Popular places for this crime to occur are coffeshops, bars, supermarkets,

gyms, churches, schools, your place of business, just about any public place.To help avoid this happening to you follow these guidelines. Never leave anything down by itself, even where you work! It's as simple as that. If you do have to put something down make sure that you or someone that you are with keeps a close eye on it. If a criminal is trying to take it odds are he won't if he/she sees someone paying attention. These criminals want to steal your property and walk away when noone is watching, they don't want to be seen or chased. Do not leave items of value in your car, especially your wallet

when playing sports or when you are at the beach.

Pickpocket

Otherwise known as a Grand Larceny in the Penal Law. This usually occurs when someone removes something from someone else's pocket, bag or purse. Famous places for this to occur are subways, buses, bus stops, bars, stores, crowded sidewalks. It can happen in just about any busy, noisy, crowded place.Follow these suggestions so they don't get you. For women always carry your pocketbook towards the front. When carried on the back or side you cannot see when someone is trying to reach in. For the men always carry your wallet in your front pocket instead of your back pocket or in a jacket pocket. For those of you who are tired or had too much to drink and are traveling on public transportation, don't fall asleep! Falling asleep makes it much easier and the criminals will even cut your pocket open to get out that wallet, it happens all the time on the subway. In addition to the above

just be aware of what is going on around you, criminals will strike when someone is not paying attention.

Snatches

More famously known to the public as a purse or chain snatch. There are many new snatches out there today. The criminal will take just about anything from you. These include cell phones, money, ipods, metro cards from the subway. Many times these criminals are on bicyles for a fast snatch

and getaway.Right now cell phones seem to be the most popular. The best way to avoid this from happening to you is not to carry those cellphones, ipods, money and cards in your hand. When not using these items put them away in a safe place. When you have to keep them out, such as when talking

on your cellphone, be aware of your surroundings. Place yourself in a position where it would be hard for someone to run or walk by you and hold onto them tightly when someone is near. As with all the other crimes listed here, pay attention to your surroundings.

Robberies

A Robbery is when someone takes property of another by using force. That force can be physical or just the threat of force. I save this for last because all the crimes discussed above can easily become Robberies. If the purse snatch is done with force, it's a Robbery. Many times a criminal will use

force to steal that money, cell phone, ipod, etc., instead of just snatching it. So if you follow all the guidelines above for unattended property, snatches, pickpockets you will automatically reduce your chances of getting robbed. When driving in your car make sure you keep your doors locked to prevent someone entering. Leave plenty of space between you and the car in front of you so you can move forward and around if necessary when approached by someone. If you live in an apartment building never enter the building with someone you've never seen before. If you see a stranger in the lobby or

hallway after entering turn around and leave. Use extreme caution and make sure noone is following you when you have just come from the following places: cash checking, banks or any place where you displayed some money.

Follow these safety guidelines and you will definitely reduce your chances of becoming a victim. If a criminal approaches you and tries to commit any of these crimes, it is important to remember not to resist. Your life is more important than your property. Property can always be replaced but not you.

Digging trenches is one of the oldest types of work

with both construction and excavating. Prior to World

War 2, trenches were dug by hand. As workers dug the

trenches deeper, the sides needed to be shored or

supported, to keep the walls of the trench from caving

in.

Following the World War, several innovations were made

in backhoes, and trench digging seemed to fade away

as a profession. By 1950, hydraulically actuated

backhoes were developed, which make it possible to

rapidly dig very deep trenches. Resulting from the

innovations with backhoes, and because there were no

workers inside digging the trenches, the walls no

longer needed to be shored.

All types of trenches have what's known as a stand up

time. This time is the amount of time that elapses

from the time the ditch is dug until the time the

trench walls start to collapse. The stand up time

is dependant on many factors, which include the type

of soil, water content, trench depth, weather

conditions, and whether or not the soil has been

disturbed.

The stand up time can be as short as zero seconds

or as long as several months, as they are very

difficult to predict. Before the trench can be dug,

someone must take soil samples as way of estimating

the stand up time. Keep in mind that the soil

conditions can be dramatically different only a

few feet from where the sample of the soil was taken.

After the trench has been dug, workers will go down

into the trench, and perform whatever work is

needed, such as laying pipe or installing telephone

lines, welding pipe, or installing valves. If the

trench walls aren't supported, there is the possibility

of the walls collapsing and trapping the workers in

the trench. Throughout history, there have been

100 - 300 people killed in the U.S. each year

due to trenches collapsing.

The public has become very aware that industrial

progress will often have negative side effects as

well. The place of engineers protecting the

public from these types of side effects is a very

controversial issue. The use of trench boxes on

the site, will help to ease this debate.

The trench box, also called a trench shield, may

be placed in the trench to prevent failures from

injuring workers. The trench box consists of two

large plates, normally made from steel, which are

parallel to the walls of the trench, and horizontal

cross members which will hold the two plates

apart.

The lower edge of the trench box rests at the

bottom of the trench, with the top edge of the

box extending above the top of the trench. The

workers will stay between the plates of the trench

box, so that if the trench does collapse, the dirt

will be stopped by the outside of the trench box.

As the work progresses, the trench box is pulled

along in the trench with a backhoe or other machine.

When a project calls for a large excavation such

as digging the foundation for a tall building, the

supporting structure for the excavated walls will

be specified in the plans. The big problem with

not using trench boxes occurs in cities, when

water or sewer lines are being installed or

repaired. The engineer doesn't specify for the

trench box in the plans, but instead leaves it

up to the contractor.

Anytime you are going to be digging trenches or

working in them, you should always use common sense

and take your time. Trenches can be very deadly,

especially if trench boxes aren't used. To be on

the safe side, you should always use a trench box

if you need to be in the trench. If you don't

need to be in the trench - do the smart thing

and let the machines do all of the work.
